We all know the mantra….. people do business with people
Ah…. TRUST.
Building it typically takes time, lots of it. And one wrong move, can blow you out of the water.
A team of German researchers set about creating “TRUST SERUM”. A chemical formulation which when administered, could speed up the acquisition of trust.
Wheeling & dealing over dinner
The researchers simulated a little bit of wheeling & dealing in a group of volunteers. As part of the experiment, the volunteers played a specially designed board game, which “tested” the trust levels between the players.
Blissfully unaware of the true intent of the game, the volunteers played the game, striving to WIN.
But the game, was gamed. Prior to playing the game, participants swallowed a glass of orange juice. Some players drank ordinary orange juice, some got orange juice laced with a specially formulated “trust serum”.
I trust you……
The “trust” serum changed the game.
When people consumed it, they shared out the booty more, something that required a high degree of trust between the players.
Trust serum…………….. just think of the possibilities.
If you could get your hands on TRUST SERUM, you could
- fast track business negotiations
- get the pretty girl to go on a date with you
- get away with “murder”
Too bad you can’t buy “trust” serum and the corner store.

The “magic” ingredient in trust serum is a common o’garden nutrient – tryptophan.
You find it in fish, soya, eggs and spinach.
The biology behind the tryptophan effect
Tryptophan is an amino acid, this means it is found in foods that are proteins . Proteins are made of amino acids.
In addition to being a building block of protein, it is also the building block of the neurotransmitter known as serotonin.
Serotonin helps modulate our moods.
And it fosters co-operation.

Deals depend on co-operation.
If you want to close a deal quickly, this research suggests you can supercharge the negotiation process, by feeding your prospect, a tryptophan rich meal.
Begin by inviting your prospect to an “eating meeting”. I suggest breakfast – the earlier you start, the sharper you’ll be and breakfast is cheaper than a three course dinner. Soften them up with a plate load of TRUST SERUM, allow enough time for the chemical to work it’s magic……….. then turn on the charm and GO FOR THE DEAL.
The tryptophan effect should push them over the edge.

The catch
Of course, the challenge with this plan, will be getting them to “choose” a tryptophan-rich meal from the menu.
- You could cook it yourself – that way you control what is on the plate COMPLETELY.
- You could try the Henry Ford approach …… you can have anything on the menu, as long as it’s the spinach quiche.
- As a last resort, administer TRUST SERUM by serving spiked orange juice. Tryptophan is available as an over-the-counter supplement
No harm no foul
