How to use biology to fight low T
Every man’s goal…………. is to be THE ALPHA MALE and get the girl.
It’s an objective, which is hard wired into the male brain. Granted, some men are born with a genetic “advantage”, allowing them to rule many castles, but healthy doses of testosterone, ensure every man is at least king of his own castle.
But biology conspires against castle domination.
It’s called GETTING OLD.
It’s happens to EVERYONE.
But, old age is not the only threat to castle domination – unfortunately, having a big belly, accelerates the biology.
Not just bellyaching fat cells
Now when you are insulin resistant, the big belly is a tumultuous mix of unhappy fat cells and trigger happy macrophages. Unhappy fat cells typically do not suffer in silence, they protest loudly, spitting out a slew of chemicals.
It is this chemical blend that contributes to insulin resistance and associated health troubles.
But you don’t have to be insulin resistant for testosterone to take early retirement….
All it takes, is lots of fat cells.
Fats on the move
Fat cells are not just storage cupboards, they are continuously moving fat about, to feed hungry cells. Now whether they are in a giving or a receiving mood, depends on hormonal cues.
Testosterone is one of the hormones they are subject to.
Since testosterone is all about BUILDING MUSCLE and things, he works hard to ensure “his boys” are taken care of. He does this by strong arming fat cells to mobilize fat supplies…..
Testosterone puts the squeeze on
To get the necessary resources, he cuts off their fat supplies, by inhibiting their lipoprotein lipase enzyme. Lipoprotein lipase, is the enzyme fat cells depend on, to off load the fat particles that have been sent their way.
With LPL PUT OUT OF COMMISSION, the fats are diverted elsewhere.
Now, this is not the only way testosterone fuels his GROWTH PLAN. He also arranges for the catecholamine system, to light a fire under the fat cells, so they release MORE fuel.
Testosterone banished from the castle
So testosterone makes you a lean mean fighting machine….
But he is HARD on fat cells.
Busy fat cells sometime need to take a break – so they fight back. Built into the fat cell’s milieu, is an enzyme or two, that “neutralizes” the testosterone squeeze.
Revenge of the fat cells
The first way fat cells can put a stop to the continuous bullying by testosterone is to lull him into a coma of sorts – this inactivates him. The enzyme that ultimately removes testosterone from the picture is keto reductase 1c enzyme – AKRIc for short.
The whole thing is quite innocent.
But, the second enzyme, in the fat cell arsenal is aromatase –this enzyme is far more malicious. It does not just inactivate him, it feminizes him – turning him into the girl hormone, estrogen.
So our hot blooded male ends up swimming with the girlie hormone, estrogen.
Now every man does have a little estrogen circulating, because there are some jobs that only a girl can do. But, the operative word, is A LITTLE.
Painting testosterone pink
When fat cells fight dirty and turn testosterone into estrogen, the estrogen levels begin to rise. This upsets gonoadotropin releasing hormone, as she preens in front of her magic mirror.
The increased levels of estrogen make her hopping mad.
Annoyed at the presence of ANOTHER WOMEN, she puts a stop to testosterone production.
Testosterone becomes an endangered species
A very unfortunate situation develops….
- Less testosterone is pumped into the system – since testosterone is an anabolic hormone, the demand for fuel is lower.
- But when the body is not actually burning fat, it needs more cupboards to store it. More fat cells are born, the process is known as adipogenesis.
- More fat cells mean……. more aromatase, which means more estrogen, causing more confusion in the brain.
- And……….. less testosterone aka low T / testosterone deficiency.
In extreme cases – man boobs and infertility, aka half a man syndrome, a situation that is officially described as hypogonadism.
Testosterone deficiency an inside job
Fortunately, t for most regular overweight Jo’s, this testosterone deficiency does not show on the outside, but it shows on the inside, it contributes to disease.
Testosterone is an atheroprotective chemical, this means it protects from heart disease.
When it goes awol, the risk of a heart attack or stroke, increases…..
It’s a vicious cycle
Less testosterone makes you fat and being fat leaves you with less testosterone.

Testosterone in a bottle
But, don’t make the mistake of thinking testosterone in a bottle will save you. It won’t….
Those pesky fat cells will do the same thing to this testosterone.
And, the hormone queen, gonadotrophin releasing hormone, will feel………… threatened and shut down the testosterone production machine.
So you need to be go after the problem….
Decrease the number of fat cells
If you’ve got rolls of fat – do what you can to lose some of it.

Be a mans kind of man
And encourage your body to make more testosterone by being MANNLY.
- Eat like a man – eat steak, not salad. Testosterone is made from cholesterol.
- Work out – do a little power lifting and do it aggressively
- Be a real jock do it for 8 hours.
NOTE : If you feel this is more than you can handle, explore the option of using an aromatase inhibitor. This is a drug that blocks the ability of fat cells to feminize testosterone. Unfortunately, it blocks the enzyme in other places too – the downside of drugs, they give and take. But, in this case, the give is more aligned to “fixing” the broken body chemistry, than taking a testosterone supplement.
