It is now considered COOL, not cheap, to provide jugs of water for refreshments at a social function. The trick to making water a WOW factor on the table :
- a stylish jug,
- generous amounts of ice, if it’s in a special shape, kudos to you and………
- a little greenery.
The good news, if the greenery is strategically chosen, it will do more than just satisfy the deep human urge to SEE GREEN, it will also make that urban water a lot cleaner.
Heavy metals in the water
We’re living in a chemical world – all sort of pollutants, both man made and natural, contaminate our water. Among the most problematic pollutants, are heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury – all of which in excess, have been shown to be harmful to human health.
But getting these heavy metals out of the water we drink, is both costly and difficult, so it is often not done.
But, Mother Nature has a cheap and easy FIX.
Introducing…………..
The cilantro squeegee
A sprig or two of this common herb, also known as coriander or Thai parsley, plopped in a pitcher of water – quickly mops up, those potentially toxic heavy metals.
The biosorbent powers of this spicy herb, were uncovered by a group of students from Ivy Tech Community College, when the students set about screening common plants, for their abililty to remove lead from contaminated water.
The students discovered, cilantro out performed activated carbon, the material usually used in home filter systems, and this little plant, is essentially FREE.
The heavy metal sucking powers of cilantro, do not arise because the cilantro plant deliberately extracts the heavy metals, it is happening “accidently”. The structure of the outer layer of their cells, allows the positively charged heavy metals to stick to the cell surface, effectively trapping them in the plant material.
So the water………….. is heavy metal FREE.
Classy and untainted…..
The research team are dreaming of creating a range of cilantro based water “cleaning” products, but this is science you can use, TODAY. Add a pot of cilantro to your fresh herb collection – don’t just spice up your stews, spice up your beverages too.
By including greenery in the water, you join the ranks of the chic in crowd and keep a toxin or two, out of you.
