Living in the RIGHT neighbourhood is important.
So what makes for a “RIGHT” neighbourhood ? The things that are usually on the list…
- security,
- clean quiet streets,
- green places & spaces,
- “good” facilities i.e. a good school, a local gym, a supermarket etc.
- the “attitude” of the other residents
the altitude
Altitude ?
Not the loftiness of the neighbours, although the more airs & graces they have, the higher the odds, the neighbourhood will be officially categorized as “GOOD”. The altitude that matters, is the height above sea level. This is what the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Centre have discovered…….
Military neighbourhoods
Are all very similar.
And military folks, seldom get to choose, which neighbourhood they live in. “Marching orders” are given, families move….
But this is precisely what makes the situation SPECIAL.
If you don’t CHOOSE the neighbourhood, but the neighbourhood CHOOSES you, what happens to you in that neighbourhood, is more than likely the neighbourhoods doing.
Curious…………. the team dug through the health records and migration patterns of nearly 100 000 US Army and Air Force recruits, looking for patterns. They studied the records for a six year period, beginning in January 2006 and ending in December 2012.
The team discovered an individual’s “marching orders” impacted their girth…..
Picking up…
Soldiers “picking up” weight – surprised ?
Unfortunately, the professional “fighting” machines of the US military, are not always as lean and mean, as required. Despite all the exercise drills, designed to ensure military personnel are able to dodge enemy bullets, the enemy arises from within. Obesity is terminating more and more military careers and costing the US Army a fortune.
Soldiers don’t start off tubby….
Moving on up
The weight creeps on – S-L-O-W-L-Y aka. it’s middle age spread.
The team discovered, when soldiers are deployed to higher grounds i.e. altitudes in excess of 1500 m, the extra pounds accumulated significantly more slowly.
Actually, it is not just a military phenomenon. Normal people, living in high altitude neighbourhoods, tend to be skinnier too. It has been documented in Nepal, India, Argentina and now, around high altitude American military bases too.
This research suggests, the weight effect, has nothing to do with people politics, it’s the neighbourhood that is doing it.
How could living in the clouds, help people be “skinnier” ?
There is not enough air
Researchers suspect it’s because there is less air, specifically, there is less oxygen at higher altitudes.
This scenario is described as hypoxia.
Hypoxia – sounds dangerous. EVERYONE KNOWS, oxygen is an absolute necessity, humans cannot survive without it. The oxygen drives the chemistry, that fuels our bodies. No fuel – no fire.
So when oxygen runs low, the body switches to plan B. And this ends up being an anti-obesity strategy.
An energy conservation plan
The molecule responsible for initiating the energy conservation plan is HIF. HIF, the hypoxia inducible factor, tweaks multiple metabolic pathways…
- Leptin production and detection, is ramped up
- Cholecystokinin levels shoot up
- Norepinephrine levels spike too
- So does EPO, erythropoietin, which ramps up red blood cell production and adjusts fat cell activity.
The upshot of these body chemistry tweaks……. biological appetite suppression.
The first RULE…
To avoid middle age spread, “Don’t eat more calories than you NEED”. Easier said than done, in a world of abundance. BUT…
If you’re not HUNGRY for NICE THINGS…..you don’t need to exercise your WILLPOWER to “Say No”. It is weight watching without any PSYCHOLOGY REQUIRED !
It’s time to MOVE
Put in for a transfer TODAY. Tell your boss you want to climb the altitude ladder and work on high ground, so you can enjoy the benefits of biologically based appetite suppression.
PS. Experiencing a little hypoxia is not the only way to exploit biology to control your food cravings. The CANDY FLOSS system uses biology to Tame Sugar Gremlins, click here to learn more.
